Elwyn Berlekamp
Elwyn Berlekamp is a professor of mathematics at UC Berkeley. He is a past chairman of MSRI, Berkeley. In past he managed Medallion Hedge Fund (now part of Jim Simons’ Renaissance Technologies Hedge Fund.) He has had his share of business controversy in past concerning publication of Go-related books in Japan.Berlekamp and Xamplify
Elwyn Berlekamp was an investor right from start and still is. He became a director too after Jeffrey Klein and Sumer Johal were let go around middle of 2002.Berlekamp as an Advisor
Elwyn Berlekamp was listed as a technical advisor. While Berlekamp may be a noted mathematician, the company dealt with statistics and psychometrics. What could he contribute here is not very clear and apparently he didn’t. I heard (from Tom Emerson ) that once he was there in the company during the eight months I worked there. Even after I left his name was prominently listed as an advisor, as were that of David Donoho, Niels Waller and Alan Stein. After my letter, that page was removed but still the word ‘advisor’ was used in his description.Elwyn Berlekamp as a Director
Given Berlekamp’s stature as an investor and his prior and current role of directors of several companies, one would have expected him to be a director at Xamplify too. But no. During the time I was there and earlier, only one person – Bob Burnett – was ever mentioned as a director – a vice chairman. Looking into his past pages maintained at UC Berkeley, it seems that Berlekamp was not a director. Currently he is the vice-chairman.Berlekamp, MSRI, Renaissance Technologies
Will be covering the potentially corrupt connection between academia and business later. That will discuss Berlekamp, MSRI, Xamplify, Jim Simons, Renaissance Technologies Hedge Fund, Bob Oliver, Andrew Rudd, Barr Rosenberg, David Donoho and other such entities.Elwyn Berlekamp - More
