Julian Brookes
Julian Brookes, prior to assuming his role as Director of Research at Xamplify, worked for Mother Jones magazine, where he wrote lightweight articles like the one where he found “irony in the prospect of The Nation hammering out a progressive agenda on the deck of a potential eco-hazard while underpaid, overworked seamen toil below.” Talking of irony. After the Xamplify adventure where he learnt management skills managing people like me, Julian Brookes moved on to conquer New York. Julian Brookes’ mentor Jeffrey Klein and some other mysterious forces saw to it that he got admission to Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism, where he was awarded Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship. Currently, he seems to be an editor at - where else - Mother Jones magazine.
Julian Brookes at Xamplify
Julian Brookes on Website
In the beginning, before I joined the company, Julian Brookes was listed on Xamplify’s website as its Director of Research with his qualifications - master's in European literature and experience as an investigative reporter – boldly listed. Later Brookes still remained in the same position but the listing was removed from the website. I guess it has something to do with potential customers and investors wondering what is a person like Julian Brookes, with absolutely no technical background, doing as the head of research at a firm dealing with supposedly bleeding-edge statistics, psychometrics and computer software. This would have ruined any chances of getting bought out.Julian Brookes and White Privilege
Life was good for Julian Brookes at the company. Just like it was for Tom Emerson. Relaxed work hours and light work load. Guess Brookes needed this for the creative work he was involved in like writing about the company’s products. Seemed to me like he was mainly used as a technical writer, albeit at rumored high salary with generous stock options.Julian Brookes and Me
He gave me lots of work – especially just before going out for his long lunches or calling it a day in the evening. Brookes would check on the progress on work he assigned me, every few minutes, when he was in the office. That kept me highly motivated and increased my work efficiency. After I started taking classes at UC Berkeley, Julian Brookes increased my workload, once even asking me to stay overnight to work on something that was neither urgent nor important.Once in a while I would hear from others that he had misgivings about my models. He didn’t talk to me directly though because it would have broken the protocol of senior executives’ model behavior.
